A federal appeals court rules that Wal-mart is going to be going to trial for discriminating against it’s female employees (more than 1.5 million!) in pay and promotions. According to an article from NOW, the suit alleges that ”female managers were paid an average of $14,500 less than male managers, and that female hourly employees were paid an average of $1,100 per year less than male hourly workers.”
And they’re trying to get out of it not by denying that the discrimination existed, but by saying that this shouldn’t be a class-action lawsuit, and saying that the women should all file seperate claims against individual stores. An article at USA Today explains:
“Wal-Mart, which employs 1.3 million workers, claimed that the conventional rules of class-action lawsuits should not apply because its 3,400 stores, including Sam’s Club warehouse outlets, operate like independent businesses and that the company did not have a policy of discriminating against women.”
